In a brief statement to reporters in the White House rose garden Saturday, President Obama introduced Clapper. He said he will count on the retired general to ensure that the U.S. has the most capable and efficient intelligence operations possible. If confirmed by the Senate, Clapper would be the fourth person to serve in the position. Clapper has been under secretary of defense for intelligence at the Pentagon. The nomination announcement follows the recent resignation of Dennis Blair, who held the intelligence post for 16 months. Blair had become the focus of criticism within the administration and in Congress about intelligence failures and coordination of information sharing by U.S. agencies. The post was created to address intelligence failures after the terrorist attacks against the United States on September 11, 2001.  .
