US Unemployment Drops; Economy Gains 431,000 Jobs VOA News 04 June 2010 Hundreds of job seekers gather at the Los Angeles Mission for the ninth annual Skid Row Career Fair in Los Angeles, California, 03 Jun 2010 Photo: AP Hundreds of job seekers gather at the Los Angeles Mission for the ninth annual Skid Row Career Fair in Los Angeles, California, 03 Jun 2010 The U.S. unemployment rate dropped two-tenths of a percentage point to 9.7 percent in May as 431,000 jobs were created.  That is the biggest net gain in jobs in years, but Friday's report from the Labor Department says most of those jobs are temporary workers hired to conduct the census. Private employers, the backbone of the economy, added just 41,000 jobs, which is much less than the previous month. U.S. President Barack Obama says the report is nevertheless a sign that the economy is getting stronger. In a speech in a Washington suburb, he also said this is the fifth month in a row that the economy has added jobs. Friday's data show a decline in the unemployment rate, but part of that is because several hundred thousand people stopped looking for work, and were therefore not counted as being unemployed.  The U.S. labor market has been slow to recover from the recession, and that has hurt home buying and consumer spending, which are key drivers of the U.S. economy.  .
