Germany has advanced to the quarterfinals of football's World Cup in South Africa with a 4-1 victory over England in Bloemfontein. Miroslav Klose beat the defense and put it between the legs of English goalkeeper David James in the 20th minute and Lukas Podolski tallied in the 32nd for a 2-0 Germany lead. Matthew Upson cut the deficit in half for England in the 37th minute. Frank Lampard appeared to tie the match at 2-2 a minute later, when TV replays showed his shot off the crossbar bounced down and crossed the line. But Uruguayan referee Jorge Larrionda ruled it no goal and Germany held a 2-1 lead at halftime. The second half belonged to Germany's Thomas Müller, who scored in the 67th and again in the 70th minute to put the match out of reach. In Sunday's late game, Argentina faces Mexico at Soccer City in Johannesburg. Mexico has defeated Argentina only four times in 25 previous meetings. Argentina won 11 of those contests, and the rest ended in draws. .
