Polish Exit Polls Show Komorowski, Kaczynski Headed for Presidential Runoff VOA News 20 June 2010 Photo: AP Photographers take pictures of a voter with his daughter casting her family's ballots in a voting station in Warsaw, Sunday, June 20, 2010. Exit polls show interim Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski winning Sunday's presidential election to find a successor to the late President Lech Kaczynski, who died April 10 in a plane crash in western Russia. The polls give Mr. Komorowski 41 percent of the vote, with 36 percent for Jaroslaw Kaczynski, the late president's twin brother. Neither is expected to win the 50 percent needed to avoid a July 4 runoff. Eight other candidates who were on the ballot trailed far behind in the voting, and have been eliminated from participation. Mr. Komorowski has been acting president since the disaster. He is leader of the moderate ruling Civic Platform Party, which supports the European Union. Mr. Kaczynski, like his dead brother, has long been hostile to the European Union and openly suspicious of Poland's historical enemies, particularly Germany and Russia. More than 30 million Poles were eligible to vote Sunday. Polish radio placed voter turnout at 42 percent. The April plane crash near Smolenski, Russia, killed not only President Kaczynski but his wife and 95 others, including high-ranking Polish civilian and military leaders. They were heading to a memorial service for 22,000 Polish officers killed by the Soviets in the early stages of World War II.
