Israel PM Defends Deadly Raid on Aid Convoy 02 June 2010 Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu (file photo) Photo: AP Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu (file photo) Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has defended his country's handling of a deadly commando raid on an aid convoy to Gaza and called criticism of the raid "hypocrisy." Mr. Netanyahu says Israeli efforts to stop and board five of the six ships in a flotilla headed to Gaza Monday went smoothly. However, he says on the sixth ship, Israeli security forces faced "extremists" who supported terrorists. He described the sixth vessel as a "boat of hatred." Israeli commandos killed at least nine activists after boarding the Turkish ship leading the flotilla.  The six-ship international convoy was attempting to bring 10,000 tons of supplies to the Gaza Strip in defiance of Israel's three-year blockade. Mr. Netanyahu remarks Wednesday were his first public comments since the incident. Prime Minister Netanyahu also said Israel would continue to stop and check every ship coming into Gaza. Earlier, Israeli officials said they would complete the deportation Wednesday of nearly 700 foreign activists seized in the raid. Some of the activists who had been detained have complained of brutal treatment by the Israelis. Meanwhile, pro-Palestinian activists have said they will make another attempt to break the blockade. Also, Irish Prime Minister Brian Cowen has appealed for Israel to allow an Irish ship, the Rachel Corrie, to deliver its aid cargo to Gaza. Egypt announced Tuesday it was temporarily opening its border with the Gaza strip to allow humanitarian aid into the region. A VOA correspondent at the Rafah crossing Wednesday reported seeing a flow of goods into Gaza but few people leaving the region.  Some information for this report was provided by Reuters. .
