Obama Criticizes Republicans in Congress VOA News 19 June 2010 US President Barack Obama, 18 Jun 2010 Photo: White House - S. Appleton US President Barack Obama, 18 Jun 2010 U.S. President Barack Obama says Republicans in Congress are blocking important progress in the U.S. In his weekly address Saturday, Mr. Obama called on Republican senators to stop holding up legislation, including a bill to extend unemployment benefits to workers. The president says he has been disappointed to see familiar politics get in the way of progress on a series of crucial issues. Mr. Obama also faulted Senate Republicans for blocking a bill that would remove a limit on liability costs for oil companies. He says U.S. citizens deserve a Senate vote on whether to remove the current $75 million cap. In the Republican weekly address, U.S. Senator Roger Wicker of the southern state of Mississippi accused Mr. Obama of exploiting the Gulf of Mexico oil spill to advance his agenda. Wicker says an Obama-backed proposal to regulate carbon dioxide emissions, known as the "cap-and-trade system," would drive up energy costs and send U.S. jobs overseas. .
