US Closes Consulate in Mexico's Ciudad Juarez VOA News 30 July 2010 The United States has closed its consulate in the Mexican border city Ciudad Juarez for a security evaluation, three months after drug gangs killed three people linked to the diplomatic post. The U.S. Embassy in Mexico City warned U.S. citizens Thursday to avoid the area around the consulate until it reopens. The statement did not say when the consulate would resume operations. Ciudad Juarez, across the U.S. border from El Paso, Texas, is considered Mexico's most violent city because of drug-related violence. Thousands of people have been killed in the border town since 2009. The U.S. State Department has warned U.S. citizens to exercise extreme caution when traveling in Ciudad Juarez and other parts of northern Mexico. The U.S Embassy says it will reschedule appointments canceled due to the closing of the consulate. Some information for this report was provided by AP and Reuters. .
