The storm struck the provincial city of Leizhou Thursday, carrying maximum winds of 126 kilometers an hour. Â The threat of Chanthu forced flights in and out of the nearby province of Hainan to be suspended, while authorities ordered more than 20,000 fishing boats to return to port and seek shelter. Â Chanthu is now on a path towards the neighboring province of Guangxi. The storm is likely to add further misery for the rain-soaked country, where more than 700 people have been killed and 347 others are missing due to severe flooding and landslides triggered by torrential rains in central and southern China. The disaster has caused nearly $21 billion in direct economic losses, including the loss of more than 645,000 houses. Some information for this report was provided by AP and Reuters. .
