House Explodes in Karachi, Pakistan VOA News 08 January 2010 Injured Pakistani Photo: AP Pakistani volunteers carry an injured person after an explosion in Karachi, Pakistan, 10 Jan 2010 A house in Pakistan's commercial center Karachi has been rocked by a large explosion, killing at least seven people. Officials say Friday's explosion flattened a home in the Baldia neighborhood that was apparently being used as a safehouse for militants. Police searching through the rubble say they have recovered guns, grenades, suicide vests and other explosives. They say the people inside the home may have set off the blast by accident. Police are trying to determine the identity of the victims. They say at least two suspects have been taken into custody. Karachi had been spared from the violence that has plagued much of the country. But there have been a series of attacks in recent weeks, including last week's bombing of a Shi'ite religious procession that killed at least 43 people. The Pakistani military has been mounting an offensive to oust militants from their strongholds in northwestern tribal regions. The militants have retaliated with bomb and shooting attacks across the country. Some information for this report was provided by AP, AFP and Reuters. .
