Guinea Swears in New Prime Minister

   At  his  swearing-in ceremony on Tuesday, Guinea's new Prime Minister,
   Jean-Marie Dore, promised to restructure the army and hold elections.
   Jean-Marie   Dore   assumed  office  as  Guinea's  new  interim  prime
   minister.    Outgoing  Prime  Minister  Kabine  Komara  spoke  at  the
   ceremony.
   Mr.  Komara  asked  his  successor  to consider restructuring Guinea's
   army.   He  also spoke of the need to hold free and fair elections and
   to address Guinea's unemployment.
   Mr.  Dore  assumed  his  post  after vowing to work with the country's
   interim  president,  General Sekouba Konate.  The two men are expected
   to  establish  a transitional government and hold elections within the
   next six months.
   At  the  swearing-in ceremony, Mr. Dore said his top priorities are to
   organize elections and restructure the army.
   Guinea's  armed  forces  have come under international scrutiny, after
   soldiers  attacked  civilians  during  a demonstration in Conakry last
   September.  More than 150 people were reported to have been killed.
   Last  month,  the  United  Nations  issued  a report that said Captain
   Moussa  Dadis  Camara, who was the ruling military leader at the time,
   should be held responsible for the violence.
   Captain  Camara  took  power  in  a  bloodless coup after the death of
   longtime ruler Lansana Conte in December 2008.
   Captain  Camara  had  vowed  not to run in future elections.  But late
   last  year,  tensions in the country began to mount, as it looked like
   the  Mr.  Camara  would  run  for  president.   Late last year, he was
   seriously wounded in an assassination attempt by his aide-de camp.  He
   is recovering in neighboring Burkina Faso.
   Earlier  this month, Burkina Faso's President Blaise Compaore mediated
   an agreement between Captain Camara and Mr. Konate to appoint Mr. Dore
   as  prime  minister  of  the interim government.  The deal states that
   members  of  the transitional government will not be allowed to run in
   the country's upcoming elections.  But Mr. Dore says that was merely a
   proposal.
