At an EU meeting in Brussels Monday, Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos expressed alarm that European passports can be used in a different manner for a different purpose. Police in the United Arab Emirates have accused Israel's Mossad spy agency of assassinating Hamas commander Mahmoud al-Mabhouh at a Dubai hotel last month. The 11 suspected killers carried forged passports from Britain, Ireland, Germany and France. Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman says there is no reason to believe Israel was involved in the killing. The EU ministers did not directly mention Israel, but several diplomats questioned Lieberman about the incident Monday. Following the EU's statement, French President Nicolas Sarkozy denounced the Dubai assassination. Speaking in Paris with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, Mr. Sarkozy said this kind of event can only increase tension and bring nothing positive. He did not accuse Israel, but said his foreign ministry had summoned the Israeli ambassador to ask about the use of a false French passport by one of the killers.
