The device burned briefly, but no one was injured. Officials say the man had checked into a hotel across the street from the Jewish house of worship. He threw his suitcase at the synagogue from a hotel window. The suitcase contained several cans of gasoline, as well as his clothing. The synagogue is located on a downtown thoroughfare. The man fled the scene and police say they are searching for him. In 2009, a crude bomb exploded in a busy tourist area, killing a French tourist.
