Severe Winter Weather Slams US Northeast VOA News 27 December 2010 Heavy snow and strong winds slammed the northeastern United States Sunday, disrupting air, rail and road traffic as Christmas holiday travelers attempted to return home. The U.S. National Weather Service issued blizzard warnings through Monday evening along the northern portion of the East Coast from Maine south to New Jersey, with winter storm warnings in effect over a larger area. Forecasters said up to 50 centimeters of snow would blanket New York City and Boston by late Monday, with gale-force winds whipping in excess of 80 kilometers per hour. Thousands of flights out of major eastern cities including New York, Boston, Philadelphia and Washington were cancelled. Passenger rail service, normally an alternative when bad weather grounds flight, was suspended Sunday between New York and Boston. .
