Egyptian officials say a tour bus slammed into a parked truck Sunday, killing eight American tourists and injuring 21 others. The Egyptian bus driver and a tour guide were also hurt. The MENA news agency says the tour bus was shuttling passengers from Aswan to Abu Simbel when the truck was struck. The U.S. embassy in Cairo issued a statement Sunday, saying it was "deeply saddened by the traffic accident" that resulted in the deaths and injuries of American tourists. The embassy said survivors of the crash are being taken to hospitals in Cairo accustomed to treating tourists. Egypt has a history of deadly crashes on the many roads that are not well maintained.  The U.S. State Department has a warning on its website that Egyptian roads can be dangerous. Embassy officials are not allowed to travel outside of Cairo at night because of the road hazards. Fourteen other foreign tourists were killed in two separate crashes in Egypt in recent months. Authorities say as many as 8,000 people die each year on Egyptian roads.  NEW: Follow our Middle East reports on [1]Twitter and discuss them on our [2]Facebook page.
