US Senate Moves to Repeal Ban on Gays in Military VOA News 18 December 2010 The U.S. Senate has advanced a measure that would repeal the ban on gays serving openly in the U.S. military, clearing the way for a vote on its final passage. Meeting in a rare Saturday session, the Senate approved a procedural vote that will allow debate to proceed on repealing the current the U.S. policy known as "Don't ask, Don't tell."  The 63 to 33 preliminary vote indicates the measure should easily pass when brought up for a final vote, perhaps later Saturday. The House approved the measure earlier this week. Earlier Saturday, the Senate failed to advance a bill that would have allowed the children of illegal immigrants the opportunity to gain legal residency -- and ultimately citizenship -- by going to college or serving in the U.S. military for two years. The House had earlier approved the bill - known as the Development, Relief and Education of Alien Minors, or "DREAM" act - in a vote of 216 to 198. U.S. President Barack Obama is also pushing the Senate to consider the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty before the upcoming holiday break. .
