Elena Kagan Sworn in as US Supreme Court Justice VOA News 07 August 2010 Photo: ASSOCIATED PRESS Elena Kagan is sworn in as the Supreme Court's newest member as Chief Justice John Roberts, right, administers the judicial oath, at the Supreme Court Building in Washington, Saturday, Aug. 7, 2010. Elena Kagan has been sworn as the 112th justice and fourth woman ever on the U.S. Supreme Court. Chief Justice John Roberts administered the oath to Kagan Saturday in Washington, D.C. Kagan's family, friends and several fellow justices attended the brief ceremony. The Senate confirmed President Barack Obama's second high court nominee Thursday in a 63 to 37 vote. At the White House Friday, Mr. Obama said it is an exhilarating development that for the first time in history there will be three women serving together on the nine-member high court.  Kagan is to take the seat of recently retired Justice John Paul Stevens. She is not expected to change the court's ideological balance of the court, which has a five-member, conservative-leaning majority.  Kagan pledged Friday to work her hardest to support and preserve the U.S. Constitution and dispense justice equally and fairly under the law. As U.S. Solicitor General, the 50-year-old Kagan represented the U.S. government before the Supreme Court. Opposition Republicans have criticized her lack of judicial experience, noting that she has never been a judge. The Supreme Court is currently not in session, and its new term begins in October. The two women currently on the court are Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Sonia Sotomayor. The first female justice, Sandra Day O'Connor, who was appointed by former President Ronald Reagan, retired in 2006.
