Insurgents Attack Southern Afghanistan Military Base

   NATO  officials say insurgents have attacked the largest U.S. military
   base in southern Afghanistan.
   The  assault Tuesday on the Kandahar airfield sparked an hour-long gun
   battle, but the attackers did not gain access to the base.
   At  least  one  suicide  bomber  detonated explosives outside the base
   perimeter.  The airfield has often been the target of attacks.
   The  French  news agency AFP has reported that a Taliban spokesman has
   claimed responsibility for the attack.
