Friday's Commerce Department report shows the economy grew at a 1.6 percent annual rate between April and June. That is down eight-tenths of a percent from a previous estimate. The report on the gross domestic product is the broadest measure of the economy. Economic growth has been hurt by the slumping housing market and high 9.5 percent national unemployment. Those problems make consumers less likely to spend money, and consumer spending drives about 70 percent of the U.S. economy.  Growth was also hampered as Americans bought more imported goods instead of things produced locally. Some information for this report was provided by AP, AFP and Reuters. .
