On Sunday, the death toll reached 1,100 people. Officials have warned the casualty count will likely rise. The Pakistani army has deployed some 30,000 troops who have rescued more than 20,000 people. However, officials say thousands of stranded villagers still need to be rescued. United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said he is "deeply saddened" by the significant loss of Pakistani lives, livelihoods and infrastructure. The U.N. estimates that one million people across Pakistan have been affected by the disaster. Local officials say the widespread devastation was caused by a week of monsoon rains, with the province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa being the hardest hit. Authorities say they fear an outbreak of waterborne diseases like diarrhea and cholera. A number of countries and the U.N. have pledged humanitarian aid. In neighboring Afghanistan, flood waters have killed more than 60 people. Afghan and NATO forces said they were using helicopters to conduct rescues and distribute aid to the worst-affected regions of Afghanistan, including the eastern provinces of Kunar and Nangarhar, bordering Pakistan.
