Police escorted Nadim Injaz out of the embassy late Tuesday to an Israeli ambulance that evacuated him to a hospital for treatment of his gunshot wounds. Earlier Tuesday, Injaz forced his way into the Turkish embassy in Tel Aviv and threatened to blow up the building if he was not granted political asylum. An Arab Israeli lawyer who spoke to Injaz by phone said he took the Turkish consul-general and his wife hostage, but that they were able to escape. Reports say Injaz was armed when he entered the embassy through a window. Shots fired by embassy security staff apparently wounded him. Injaz is from the West Bank town of Ramallah. Israeli police say he recently finished a prison term for breaking into the British embassy in Tel Aviv several years ago. Israeli Foreign Ministry officials told VOA that Injaz is a former collaborator with Shin Bet, the Israeli internal security agency. Tensions between Israel and Turkey have been running high since an Israeli raid on a Gaza-bound aid flotilla in May killed nine Turkish activists.
