Dozens of other people were injured. A tornado more than a kilometer wide tore through central Mississippi, killing residents, destroying homes, blocking highways and knocking out power. Yazoo City was hit the hardest. Mississippi's governor, Haley Barbour, declared a state of emergency in the affected counties.
