May 28, 2009 Strong Earthquake Strikes Near Honduras --------------------------------------- http://enews.voanews.com/t?ctl=2479AD1:A6F02AD83191E16032687A1AA4DFE54BE55ED32ED25AB8F6& At least one person killed in 7.1 magnitude quake, northeast of Roatan; no initial reports of major damage A strong earthquake struck off the Honduran coast early Thursday, killing at least one person and sending frightened residents running into the streets. The U.S. Geological Survey says a 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck about 64 kilometers northeast of the Honduran city of Roatan, with a depth of just 10 kilometers. The quake killed a man when a house collapsed in the northern city of La Lima, about 50 kilometers west of the coast. There were no initial reports of major damage, although the quake caused some power outrages in Roatan. The Pacific Tsunami Center issued a tsunami watch for Honduras, Belize and Guatemala. But the agency said it called off the alert because no damaging waves occurred within two hours of the earthquake, the estimated arrival time for the tsunami. Some information for this report was provided by AFP, AP and Reuters. .
