President Obama said his economic recovery plan has worked as intended, and he dismissed Republican criticism categorizing his $787 billion economic stimulus plan as a failure. He said the plan, enacted in February, already has provided $43 billion in tax relief, extended unemployment and health insurance to those who have lost their jobs, and eased the rate of further job losses. Mr. Obama rejected suggestions of a second stimulus package, and he urged Americans to be patient with the rate of recovery. He said the plan "was designed to work over two years" and will accelerate as this year goes on. In the weekly Republican response, Representative Eric Cantor of the eastern U.S. state of Virginia, added to criticisms of the plan, saying it is full of "pork barrel spending, government waste and massive borrowing." Cantor said President Obama's economic decisions have not produced jobs or prosperity and have not worked. He accused the president of racking up trillions of dollars more in debt. He said Republicans want reductions in both taxes and spending. Some information for this report was provided by AP. .
