Governor David Paterson will announce his selection Friday. Gillibrand, a second-term Democrat, is not as well-known as some of the other candidates for the Senate seat. One of the leading contenders, Caroline Kennedy, announced Wednesday that she is not interested in the position. The daughter of slain former President John F. Kennedy said she made the decision for "personal reasons."Another top candidate for the position was state Attorney General Andrew Cuomo.
