Officials say the demonstrators in jail early Friday, were among 300 people detained during clashes Thursday between protesters and police. Police used tear gas on the demonstrators, who smashed windows and set fire to trash bins as security forces sought to block their march toward central Strasbourg. U.S. President Barack Obama arrived in Strasbourg ahead of his talks with 27 other NATO leaders at the alliance's two-day summit, which is also being held in Baden-Baden, Germany. German and French authorities have deployed about 25,000 police to maintain security around the two towns. Meanwhile, there was a heavy police presence in London Thursday after violent demonstrations Wednesday aimed at world leaders attending the G20 summit. More than 80 people were arrested during the protests, and one person died of a suspected heart attack. Several hundred protesters gathered again Thursday in central London and also outside the city's Ex Cel Center, where the summit was held.
