Bush is asking Americans to remember the men and women of the U.S. military as the nation's Memorial Day holiday approaches. In his weekly radio address Saturday, Mr. Bush says the true purpose of the holiday, celebrated on Monday, is to honor members of the U.S. military whose sacrifices have made American freedom possible, throughout the history of the United States. The president said Americans' military valor "defeated the great totalitarian threats of the last century." Mr. Bush added that U.S. military personnel now serving in Iraq, Afghanistan and other parts of the world are there to oppose terrorists who pose a new totalitarian threat to freedom. The president encouraged Americans to take part in commemorative events taking place from Saturday through Monday, the official Memorial Day holiday. At midafternoon on Monday (3 p.m., local time, throughout the country), Mr. Bush asked all Americans to join in a moment of silent remembrance. .
