US, Afghan Troops Abandon Base Overrun by Militants

NATO says it has vacated the newly-built base in Wanat, but that Afghan
and international forces will continue to patrol the area 
U.S. and Afghan troops have pulled out of an outpost in eastern
Afghanistan where militants killed nine American soldiers this week.
NATO said Wednesday that it has vacated the newly-built base in a
village (Wanat) on the border of Nuristan and Kunar provinces, but that
Afghan and international forces will continue to patrol the area, which
is close to the border with Pakistan.A large force of militants stormed
the outpost Sunday, killing nine U.S. soldiers and wounding at least 19
other troops - both Americans and Afghans. The combat losses were among
the greatest the U.S. military has suffered since entering Afghanistan
in 2001.Afghan troops say they killed seven insurgents in the same area
