He was 64 years old. A spokesman says Fischer died at a Reykjavik hospital of kidney failure, after a long illness. The U.S.-born Fischer became famous when he beat Soviet chess champion Boris Spassky in 1972. The United States charged Fischer with violating international sanctions when he won a 1992 exhibition rematch with Spassky in the former Yugoslavia.
