Strong Aftershock Follows Deadly Quake in Southwestern China

Xinhua news agency says rescue workers are bringing water, food and
tents Sunday to the quake-affected areas in Sichuan and Yunnan provinces

Chinese state media say a powerful aftershock has rattled the same area
in southwestern China where an even stronger earthquake killed at least
28 people Saturday. Chinese residents take temporary shelter at a

southwest China's Sichuan province Sunday, 31 Aug. 2008The Xinhua news
agency says rescue workers are bringing water, food and tents Sunday to
the quake-affected areas in Sichuan and Yunnan provinces. Xinhua says
Saturday's quake damaged or destroyed more than 100,000 homes and
affected at least 600,000 people. Authorities say at least 238 people
were hurt. Heavy rain and poor communication have hampered rescue
efforts and made it difficult to get complete casualty figures. The
center of Saturday's quake was located about 30 kilometers southeast of
Panzhihua, near Sichuan's border with Yunnan province. Chinese experts
say the tremor had a magnitude of 6.1, but the U.S. Geological Survey
measured the magnitude at 5.7.On May 12, an earthquake in Sichuan
province killed nearly 70,000 people and left millions more homeless.
The Chinese government says it will cost nearly $150,000 to rebuild
areas devastated by that massive quake.
