September 10, 2007 Report: US to Build Base Near Iran-Iraq Border ---------------------------------------------- http://enews.voanews.com/t?ctl=195ADB8:A6F02AD83191E1601D68E7513FF93C149574F7DCC14957C0 Wall Street Journal says base aims to stop flow of advanced Iranian weaponry to Shi'ite militants in Iraq A leading U.S. newspaper reports the U.S. military is preparing to build its first base for American forces in Iraq near the border with Iran. The Wall Street Journal reports in Monday's edition that the base is part of a new effort to stop the flow of advanced Iranian weaponry to Shi'ite militants in Iraq. Major Toby Logsdon, the U.S. officer overseeing the project, is quoted by the Journal as saying the new base will have living quarters for at least 200 soldiers. He said he hopes U.S. forces will begin living at the new outpost in November. The base will be about 6.5 kilometers from the Iranian border. Iran has denied repeated U.S. charges that it is supplying weapons, including sophisticated roadside bombs that can penetrate armor, to Iraqi militants.
