opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi has met with a Burmese government
liaison, the latest effort to move forward political reconciliation in
the military-ruled country.

Officials say Aung San Suu Kyi was taken from her home Monday, to a
state guest house where she met with Aung Kyi, a senior member of
Burma's military-led government who has been appointed as a go-between
with the opposition.

The two met for about an hour.

The meeting was their third since Aung Kyi was appointed and comes as
regional leaders prepared to confront Burma over its bloody crackdown
on pro-democracy and anti-government protests in September.

World powers have been urging Burma to release all political prisoners
and open a dialogue with opposition leaders.

Aung San Suu Kyi has spent 12 of the last 18 years under some form of
detention.

Her National League for Democracy won elections in 1990, but Burma's
government has refused to recognize the results and has prevented the
party from taking office.
