President Bush (file photo)President Bush has reiterated his call for
Congress to pass a measure providing funding for the war in Iraq,
without attaching a condition that sets goals for troop withdraw.

Mr. Bush addressed the issue in his weekly radio address Saturday, and
said Congress knows he will veto a bill that tells military commanders
how to conduct the war.

On Friday, Senate minority Republicans blocked a Democratic proposal
to link $50 billion in war funding to a goal of withdrawing U.S.
combat soldiers from Iraq by the end of next year.

Senate Democrats also had blocked a Republican proposal to provide $70
billion for the war effort, with no restrictions attached.

Congressional leaders have said that if they cannot pass funding
legislation tied to troop withdrawals now, they will wait until next
year to revisit the issue.
