Authorities say separatist rebels Saturday planted the bomb in a hired rickshaw, which was parked near a maternity hospital in the city of Guwahati. The rickshaw driver was among those killed in the explosion. Residents in the area immediately staged a demonstration in a nearby market, demanding that shops be closed to protest recent repeated bombings. They also criticized authorities for providing poor security in the area. A local police official, Assistant Deputy Inspector General D.B. Kakoti, says the United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) is responsible for the blast. ULFA is one of several rebel groups in Assam fighting for independence. It is blamed for 20 bombings in the past two months. .
