June 14, 2007 Lebanon Mourns Assassinated Anti-Syrian Lawmaker ------------------------------------------------ http://enews.voanews.com/t?ctl=17D27BB:A6F02AD83191E16041CA0D105BCC5E249574F7DCC14957C0 Walid Eido was among 10 people killed in car bomb attack in Beirut Wednesday Aftermath of Walid Eido's assasination in Beirut, 13 Jun 2007Thousands of Lebanese have attended the funeral in Beirut of anti-Syrian lawmaker Walid Eido, who was killed in a car bomb blast on Wednesday. Mourners chanted anti-Syrian slogans in the funeral procession Thursday, led by Saad Hariri and other leaders of the anti-Syrian majority bloc in parliament. Hariri told the funeral service that the criminals responsible for the bombing will be punished. Allies of Eido have blamed Syria for the attack, which also killed Eido's son and eight other people. Syria today condemned the bombing and denied responsibility. Businesses, schools and government offices were closed across Lebanon Thursday, as the country observed a day of mourning for Eido. President Bush condemned the assassination as the latest attack against people trying to end Syria's interference in Lebanon. U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called the car bombing in Beirut a "heinous crime aimed at destabilizing Lebanon." Late Wednesday, Lebanese Prime Minister Fuad Siniora called for a meeting of Arab foreign ministers to discuss the lawmaker's murder. Seven anti-Syrian figures in Lebanon, including former prime minister Rafik Hariri, have been killed in similar bombings or other attacks since 2005. Hariri's son, Saad, said the people who murdered Eido are the same ones who killed his father. This week, the United Nations began putting together an international tribunal to try suspects in the killing of Rafik Hariri - a step strongly opposed by Syria and its Hezbollah-led allies in Lebanon. Syria has denied involvement in the killings. Some information for this report was provided by AFP, AP and Reuters. .
