US Air Strike Mistakenly Hits Kurdish Police in Iraq

mistakenly hit a Kurdish police position in northern Iraq, killing
five policemen in the city of Mosul.

The military said the attack early Friday was intended against
suspected al-Qaida in Iraq members. Kurdish officials put the death
toll from the airstrike at eight killed and six wounded.

killed at least eight insurgents and destroyed a building south of
Baghdad.

A military statement said U.S. ground troops called for air support
after coming under heavy fire during a raid in the Arab Jabour area

soldier and wounded three others today in Basra in southern Iraq.
Three U.S. soldiers were killed during combat operations in western
al-Anbar province on Thursday.

U.S. and Iraqi officials have pledged to crack down on sectarian
militias as part of the new Baghdad security operation that began this
week.

Iraqi troops on Thursday arrested a senior Iraqi Health Ministry
official. U.S. military officials say the man is implicated in
sectarian killings and helping the Mahdi Army of radical Shi'ite
cleric Moqtada al-Sadr infiltrate the Health Ministry.
