Police say the attack took place Tuesday morning near the College of Economic Sciences in western Baghdad's Iskan district. Monday, a series of bombings in two predominantly Shi'ite markets in Baghdad killed at least 87 people and wounded 165 others. The bombings hit Baghdad during a new security crackdown by thousands of Iraqi and U.S. forces aimed at bringing an end to sectarian violence in the capital. Also on Monday, Iraqis marked the first anniversary, according to the Islamic calendar, of a Sunni militant attack on the Askariya Mosque in Samarra, a site holy to Shi'ites. That attack sparked Iraq's descent into sectarian bloodshed. Separately, the U.S. military said one American soldiers was killed Sunday while conducting combat operations in Al Anbar province, west of Baghdad. In another development, German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier says two Germans have been missing in Iraq for a week and may have been kidnapped. He declined to give further details.
