They say those killed were two Hamas militants and two civilians, including a 40-year-old bystander. Palestinian witnesses say the fighting broke out when Israeli forces rolled into an area near the town of Khan Yunis early Tuesday. The Israelis also carried out air strikes in the region. The Israeli army says troops were conducting an operation to search and destroy tunnels along the frontier in an effort to prevent cross-border Palestinian rocket fire. Israel said its soldiers opened fire when they encountered Palestinian gunmen. Israel says its forces also carried out a separate operation in the West Bank overnight, and detained 13 suspected militants. The Israeli army did not give details of that operation.
