A suicide car bombing north of the Iraqi capital has killed nine
American soldiers and wounded 20 in one of the worst attacks on U.S.
ground forces since the 2003 invasion.

The umbrella group Islamic State of Iraq, which includes al-Qaida in
Iraq, claimed responsibility for Monday's blast near Baquba in an
Internet statement.

The U.S. military says the bomber blew up his vehicle near a patrol
base near the city of Baquba on Monday.

Baquba is the capital of Diyala province where U.S. and Iraqi forces
have been battling Sunni insurgents and al-Qaida in Iraq terrorists.

Iraqi police say gunmen dressed as Iraqi army troops raided a village
near Baquba Tuesday, killing six people, wounding 15 others and
burning several homes.

In Baghdad, police said four people were wounded when two bombs
exploded near the Iranian embassy.

Separately, the U.S. military in Iraq said coalition forces have
detained 10 suspected terrorists and discovered a weapons cache in
separate operations in Baghdad and the western city of Fallujah.
