Police say the blast on the bus occurred Monday, in Ampara district, about 350 kilometers east of the capital, Colombo. On Sunday, military officials said suspected Tamil Tiger rebels shot and killed six ethnic Sinhalese civilians in the eastern district of Batticaloa. Batticaloa has been the site of heavy fighting between government soldiers from Sri Lanka's Sinhalese majority and Tamil rebels. Rebels say the Tamils suffer discrimination and abuse at the hands of the Sinhalese. Renewed fighting in violation of a 2002 ceasefire has killed about 4,000 people in the last 18 months.
