Police Saturday took Kasparov and several other members of the United Civil Front group to court. More than a 1,000 people gathered in central Moscow for a so-called "March of Dissent" to protest what they say is the government suppression of freedoms. Protesters also called for a fair presidential vote in 2008. Thousands of police were on hand, outnumbering the protesters. Russia's interior ministry said police acted according to law. A coalition of anti-Kremlin factions called "Other Russia" organized the rally. It is planning to stage a protest Sunday in President Putin's home city of St. Petersburg.
