One witness told the court Wednesday, how Saddam's forces gunned down Kurdish detainees who thought they were being taken to another detention center. The witness said he survived the slaughter by running and falling into a ditch that he said was full of bodies. Prosecutors say Iraqi forces killed more than 180,000 Kurds in the 1988 Anfal campaign in northern Iraq. The former dictator and seven co-defendants are facing charges of crimes against humanity, including murder and torture. On Tuesday, the judge agreed to allow the return of defense attorneys who have boycotted proceedings because of alleged government interference. But it was not clear if defense lawyers attended Wednesday's court session. Some information for this report was provided by AFP and AP. .
