Police say a rebel attack in the eastern province of Khost killed three policemen. Later, in the western city of Herat, a roadside bomb exploded near a security convoy, killing two people. And in the southern city of Kandahar, gunmen killed a provincial delegate Mohammad Yunus Husseni. In Rome, Italian Foreign Ministry officials say they believe an Italian freelance photojournalist has been kidnapped. Gabriele Torsello disappeared in southern Afghanistan Saturday. In other news, Pakistan began a 10-week program to register Afghan refugees and provide them with identity cards. The program, supported by the U.N. refugee agency, is the first such effort to register Afghans in Pakistan. There are an estimated 2.5 million Afghans in Pakistan. Some Afghans fled to Pakistan after the 1979 Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, others left later to escape the Taleban's oppressive rule. Other have sought jobs to escape the poverty in their homeland.
