Palestinian witnesses say an Israeli airstrike on a car in the Gaza
Strip has killed at least three people.

Witnesses say the car attacked early Friday, in northern Gaza belonged
to a Hamas militant.

Hours earlier, Israeli troops exchanged gunfire with Palestinian
militants in southern Gaza. Palestinians say one woman bystander was
killed.

On Thursday, at least 10 Palestinians, including three Hamas
militants, were killed in Israeli raids and airstrikes in the
Palestinian territory.

In recent days, the Israeli military has stepped up its Gaza
offensive, which began after Palestinian militants abducted an Israeli
soldier in late June.

Israel has rejected a Hamas proposal to free the soldier in exchange
for hundreds of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli custody.

Also Thursday, exiled Hamas political leader Khaled Mashaal called for
an Arab summit to establish a timeline for Palestinian statehood. He
said the new country should include territory occupied by Israel in
1967.

Mashaal, who lives in Syria, also repeated Hamas' long-held position
not to recognize Israel.
