Security Council plus Germany are meeting in London Wednesday to discuss the standoff over Iran's nuclear program. Officials are discussing proposed European trade and technology incentives for Iran to stop enriching uranium. Germany, France and Britain proposed the incentives last week. Media reports say the package includes possible Western aid in building a light-water reactor in Iran for nuclear energy. Iran has dismissed the package and said its uranium enrichment program is not reversible. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov On Tuesday, Russia's foreign minister called on Iran to accept the European incentives and to abandon uranium enrichment activities. Sergei Lavrov said he hopes Iran will also cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency. The U.S. and Europe are seeking a U.N. resolution that would allow sanctions against Iran if it continues enriching uranium. Russia and China are opposed to sanctions. Western powers suspect Iran's aim is to make nuclear weapons. Tehran denies this.
