Residents of Mogadishu hid behind a watertank, to escape fighting
Thursday May 11, 2006Heavy fighting has erupted again in the lawless
Somali capital, Mogadishu, as Islamic fighters and warlord militias
clashed for a sixth consecutive day.

Witnesses say rival fighters battled in the streets Friday, while
others were gathering in the northern neighborhood of Sii-Sii and
Huriwa in central Mogadishu for new skirmishes.

The death toll from several days of fighting in Somalia rose to more
than 120 Thursday. The United Nations said weapons were flowing into
the country despite an arms embargo.

Islamic militias and an alliance of warlords have been fighting for
control of parts of Mogadishu, mainly in the northern Sii-Sii
neighborhood, since Sunday. Witnesses say most of the casualties have
been civilians caught in the crossfire.

Somalia has suffered 15 years of sporadic violence since the ouster of
former dictator Mohamed Siad Barre. Some information for this report
