Lay was convicted of conspiracy and fraud last month, in connection
with the collapse of energy trading giant Enron.

The company's bankruptcy cost investors billions of dollars, wiped out
thousands of jobs, and became a symbol of corporate dishonesty that
sparked legal reforms.

Enron appeared to use innovative energy trading strategies to make
large profits, but a court found they instead were lying to investors,
hiding losses and inflating profits.

Lay had not yet been sentenced for his crimes, but was expected to
face a lengthy prison term.

Officials have been trying to recover tens of millions of dollars from
Lay and his co-conspirator Jeff Skilling.
