Zimbabwe Sees Increased Flow of Funds For HIV-AIDS Care ------------------------------------------------------- http://enews.voanews.com/t?ctl=132F116:3919ACA Most of $64 million in monies from Global Fund to Fight AIDS coming to Zimbabwe will go to purchase of anti-retroviral drugs - now available to a relative handful of patients The many Zimbabweans who are living and struggling with HIV-AIDS had some good news this week: the country is soon to receive $64 million from the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, that was awarded in its fifth grant round. Health Minister David Parirenyatwa said Sunday that the funds will mainly go to the acquisition of life-saving anti-retroviral drugs and prevention programs. Around one in five Zimbabwean adults are HIV positive; while the prevalence rate has declined in the past few years from one in four, AIDS kills some 3,000 Zimbabweans each month. Only a fraction of Zimbabweans fighting AIDS have access to anti-retroviral drugs. Meanwhile, Zimbabwe’s Country Coordinating Mechanism – a panel of state officials and nongovernmental organization representatives which prepares fund applications and administers grants - is now putting the final touches on another application. Reporter Carole Gombakomba of VOA's Studio 7 for Zimbabwe spoke with HIV-AIDS activist Lyndie Francis, director of a Harare treatment facility called The Center and a member of Zimbabwe's CCM, about the incoming grant and funding pipeline.
