briefly hospitalized in Washington Monday after experiencing shortness
of breath, but was released about four hours later.

A statement from Cheney's office said he was taken to George
Washington Hospital at 3 a.m. local time (0800 GMT). He was released
at 7:30 a.m. local time.

Medical tests determined the vice president was retaining fluid due to
medication he was taking for a foot problem. The statement said he was
given medication for the problem.

Cheney has a history of health problems, including four heart attacks.
He underwent surgery in September to repair aneurysms in the back of
both of his knees.
