the northeastern United States has shut down airline travel and cut
power to thousands of residents.

U.S. weather forecasters say up to 35 centimeters of snow have fallen
in some areas since Saturday, and more snow is expected through
Sunday.  They also warn of strong winds and freezing temperatures.

Officials said Ronald Reagan National airport in Washington was closed
because of weather conditions.  Air traffic was disrupted in other
major cities, including New York and Philadelphia.

Heavy snow snapped trees and power lines near Washington, cutting
electricity to thousands of people.

The National Weather Service issued a blizzard warning for parts of
New York state.  And there was a heavy snow warning for an area
extending from West Virginia to Maine.
