Witnesses say more than 1,000 police officers marched through city streets Saturday.  Parliament guards, mostly from the ruling Hamas radical movement, tried to block the crowd, but were pushed aside as protesters fired shots in the air and chanted slogans. Similar protests were held in other parts of the Gaza Strip and West Bank. Palestinian government employees have received little or no pay since Hamas swept to power in elections last January. Western donor nations to the Palestinian Authority have been withholding aid after Hamas rejected demands to recognize Israel and renounce violence. The Palestinian leadership is preparing to decide its next move after declaring an end to talks with Hamas on forming a national unity government acceptable to Western donors.
